Criminals Are Constantly Adapting Their Tactics. Vigilance Is Paramount.
Providing our members with reliable guidance is a core part of the Switch FCU mission. We are dedicated to shielding you and your family from financial harm. As you manage your daily finances, please remain alert to these prevalent schemes.
Vigilance Against Phishing
Avoid sharing sensitive data—such as login credentials, Social Security numbers, or home addresses—in response to unsolicited calls or digital messages. To verify a site's authenticity, manually enter the web address into your browser rather than using provided links. This ensures you are interacting directly with the genuine source.
Look for red flags like spelling errors, irregular email domains, and poor phrasing, which frequently indicate a scam.
Fraudulent Charitable Appeals
The FTC recommends thorough verification before contributing to any charity or crowdfunding effort, especially those tied to current global events. Resisting high-pressure tactics is crucial; if a solicitor requests payment via wire transfer, gift card, or cash, it is a significant warning sign.
Deceptive Account Notifications
Scammers often distribute alarming alerts claiming your financial accounts have been "locked," "suspended," or "disabled." These messages typically include a link to a counterfeit login portal designed to mirror our own. These fraudulent sites are built solely to harvest your private banking credentials for illicit activities.
PLEASE NOTE: OUR TEAM WILL NEVER CONTACT YOU TO SOLICIT SENSITIVE DATA IN THIS MANNER.
Deceptive Investment Schemes
Exercise caution with online investment claims, particularly those involving companies promising breakthroughs in medical detection or prevention. These "pump and dump" schemes aim to inflate stock values through false narratives. The SEC advises extreme skepticism regarding any such offers, as claims of guaranteed returns or miracle products are inherently untrustworthy.
These Misleading Narratives Are Common Across Social Platforms. Maintain Skepticism And Avoid Interacting With Unverified Links.
Mystery Shopper Deceptions
In this scenario, an individual responds to a "Secret Shopper" job listing and receives a fraudulent check via courier. The instructions require the victim to deposit the funds and then purchase retail gift cards, sharing the codes with the scammer. Once those codes are transmitted, the funds are gone, leaving the victim responsible for the returned check.
Exploitation of Seniors
Some scammers target grieving families by monitoring obituaries and claiming the deceased owed a specific debt. They may attend services or contact survivors directly, attempting to pressure them into making payments for these non-existent obligations.
The "Grandparent Scam" is another common tactic where fraudsters pose as a grandchild in distress. By using vague greetings like, "Hi Grandma, it’s me," they wait for the victim to provide a name, thereby establishing a false identity. They then invent an urgent financial crisis that requires an immediate transfer of funds.
Solicitation Fraud
A classic example is the "found money" ruse, where a con artist claims to have discovered a large sum of cash. They offer to share the proceeds if the victim provides a "good faith" deposit, often persuading them to withdraw funds from their account to secure the fake payout.
Staying Informed Is Your Best Defense
Never finalize a check transaction, authorize a donation, or provide personal details to an unverified party. If you suspect you have been targeted, please notify us immediately at (724) 588-6119.

Identity Deception & Scams
Phishing attempts often use urgent email or text messages to trick you into revealing private information. These messages are designed to look like they come from trusted organizations but often demand an immediate response. Some may even install malware if you click an embedded link. Protect yourself by avoiding unverified links and never sharing account details via digital messaging or unsolicited calls.
Switch FCU will never use email to request your passwords, account numbers, or Social Security information. Your credentials should remain strictly confidential. If you receive a suspicious message that appears to be from us, please call for verification at (724) 588-6119.
Managing Disputed Charges
Fraud is defined as unauthorized or illegal activity. Simple billing errors, such as being charged twice for a single purchase, are handled as disputes rather than fraud. For assistance with these errors, call 1(800) 600-5249 for Credit Cards or our main office for Debit Card issues. Please remember that lending your card to others is prohibited; charges made by family or friends with your card, as well as forgotten recurring subscriptions, do not qualify as fraudulent activity.
